415. Bullarto Reservoir - Babbington Hill 13.5km Wombat State Forest

Twelve intrepid U3A hikers headed out for this walk in cold, threatening weather

conditions. Thanks to Kim for stepping up at the last minute to lead the walk due to

Mark’s incapacity.


We had fun and games the cars in attempting reach the start of the walk on a short

cut back track, thanks to the muddy conditions. After retracing our tracks, we made

it on the main access route. The walk commenced in a pleasant sunny manner

following the undulating Pipeline track through the forest. Wombat Forest lived up to

its’ name with wombat scats left as wayside markers every 300 metres along the

track.


Once we crossed Kangaroo Creek we had the long steady climb up Badger Track

toward Babbington Hill. Kim did his best Philomena Cunk historical impression

followed by a David Attenborough-ish explanation of fauna and flora. 


The climax of the walk was the steep 80 metre ascent of Babbington Hill rewarded with views

amongst the trees of the surrounding countryside. A short descent took us back to

the pleasant Bullarto Reservoirs picnic spot for lunch and a good chat.

A good day had by all in cool, sunny conditions.

 U3A Hike No 287 Hike Report by Colin Fraser Eight hikers assembled outside the Marty Busch Reserve in Sebastopol for an 11.5 km hike on the Frith Gully-Mt Misery Loop in the Enfield State Park. We travelled in two vehicles to the start of the walk at Bald Hill on Incolls Road, Enfield. The walk was graded as moderate, and described as continuously hilly. 368. Vaughan Springs - Helge Track 11.8km

 U3A Hike No 368 Hike Report by Deb Karmouche The sun, scenery and picnic stop made this walk perfect for this weeks assembly of  9 hikers . When we gathered at the start and commenced the walk the track was icy and beanies and gloves were needed, but we finished the day in sunhats and shirts. The walk started and finished at the beautiful picnic area of Vaughan Springs with mineral water that only Colin was game enough to sample. We followed the river which we crossed before climbing up into more forested areas and very early on we were all shedding clothes and donning sunglasses and hats   Forest tracks led us past several very deep mine shafts and then to the morning tea stop at the top of the hill surrounded by remnants of the Cornish chimney associated with the Tubal Cain Mine. 390. Jubilee Mine-Jubilee Historic Area 7.5km

 U3A Hike No 390. Hike Report by Joan Brick ⛏️ The Journey Begins: Italian Gully The Era of Alluvial Gold (1850–1882) The hike started with a history lesson at Italian Gully. Unlike the massive operations later in the day, this area was defined by "easy" gold. Method: Shovels, picks, and pans. The Boom: A rush of hopefuls arrived to work the surface earth, but the area was eventually abandoned once the easy gold and water supplies vanished. 🌸 Unexpected Finds & The Birdtrail Nature Among the Ruins Before hitting the heavy industrial sites, the bush offered up its own treasures. Spotted Hyacinth Orchid: A rare, leafless find that stood out against the summer scrub.
