362. Lake Wendouree 6km
U3A Hike No 362
Hike Report by Marianne Kennedy
Mark Hawley was to lead our weekly hike, the Rhinoceros Hike, in the Brisbane Ranges, but he forecast was for low temperatures, strong winds and rain which would create slippery tracks therefore a not very enjoyable adventure.
Mark made a responsible decision to postpone this hike. Instead he offered an alternative suggestion to meet at Pipers Restaurant at 9.30 am and walk Lake Wendouree. The options were to have coffee before or after the walk (or both).
On arrival at Pipers, with light rain falling, Mark checked the weather radar and, because the rain appeared as though it might pass over in about 20 minutes, he suggested we have a coffee first. It did not take any persuasion for the eleven walkers to agree.
After coffee, chatting and smiles all round we commenced our walk around the lake in a clockwise direction.
Walking the lake is always a very pleasant experience regardless of the weather. With all the appropriate clothing; raincoats, beanies, gloves etc. we walked and chatted while noticing the new homes being built and some of us admitting we could not remember what had been there before.
The rain and wind had little impact on our walk. The water lapping the shore of the lake created a very relaxing atmosphere.
On the South side of the lake Mark made a slight detour to check out the rotunda. He had been told that there was a geocache hidden there. However, with some assistance from the group, he was unsuccessful in finding the cache.
Continuing on we arrived back at Pipers after a very enjoyable walk. We all agreed that Mark’s suggestion was great! It was something different and very social. It was lovely to welcome Myra back after spending six months in QLD caring for her brother.
Five of us had another coffee at Pipers: a great way to finish the morning.
Thanks to Mark for leading a very enjoyable walk and making our Thursday hiking morning interesting and special.
