358. You Yangs-Flinders Peak Circuit 13km
U3A Hik #358
Hike Report By Kim Radenic
On a beautifully crisp and sunny morning, 12 of us gathered at the tennis courts in Forest Street, Buninyong, ready for our nearly hour-long drive to the You Yangs. While one vehicle took a more “scenic route” (no names mentioned!), involving a few missed turns, we somehow all arrived at the base car park around the same time—perfectly in sync.
We were warmly joined by Corinne from Hepburn U3A, who has now become a member of our group. Mark, our leader for the day, briefed us on the plan: we’d be hiking the eastern side of the You Yangs, with an optional detour up to Flinders Peak Lookout at the end.
This hike delivered something refreshingly different from our usual walks. The rocky terrain and rugged scenery were spectacular. We set off on the East Track— a steep and well-formed track weaving between split rocks. Along the way, we were rewarded with expansive views of Corio Bay, Avalon Airport, and the Melbourne city skyline emerging through the fog—like skyscrapers poking fingers through a woolly blanket.
From the lookout, we also glimpsed the majestic Bunjil Geoglyph—a giant eagle formed with boulders on the ground. It was the perfect place to enjoy morning tea, bask in the sun, and catch our breath.
This particular trail lacked the usual signs of gold mining, though Gordon pointed out the use of local granite, clearly visible in the formed paths. Geoff also drew our attention to a tenacious South African Boneseed, a weed overrunning some areas—its hard seeds make it nearly impossible to eradicate.
Back at ground level, we walked across and around the Bunjil eagle sculpture. Then came the optional hike up to Flinders Peak—10 of us took on the challenge. With or without packs, everyone agreed it was well worth it. The clear day gave us sweeping 360° views from the summit. Simply stunning.
We returned to the base for a well-earned lunch. Huge thanks to Mark for leading and Gordon for being our whip. A fantastic day all around—well done, everyone!
