325. Rhinoceros Walk Brisbane Ranges NP, 11.7km, circuit.
U3A Hike No 325
Hike Report By Chris Charleson
Eight of us met up at the Friday Camping Area near Steiglitz for a rhinoceros shaped trail. We did spot several swamp wallabies but no rhinos. (or did we?)
The hilly track took in sections of the Burchell Trail. The forest trees included stringybarks, ironbarks as well as other eucalypts. The understory had prostrate bushpeas, white flowering tea trees and blue flowering lilies.
Some areas had been affected by earlier bushfires. More recent wind storms and cinnamon fungus damage was also evident. Some really tall grasstrees are spectacular.
The Burchell Trail is well marked and maintained. This section included two main campsites.
The offset walking platform at a gully crossing provided an ideal morning tea stop.
A diverse array of birdlife could be heard- no doubt attracted by the protective prickly wattle shrubs. We passed different sections of the Durdidwarrah Creek.
Towards the end of the walk we came to the United Albion Goldmining site with its extensive remnant foundations and large mullock heap.
We beat the incoming rain at our lunch stop back at the picnic area.
Thanks again to Gordon and Andrew for their guidance.
