324. Porcupine Ridge-Limestone Track 12.3 km Loddon State Forest
U3A Hike No 324
Hike Report by Joan Brick
Another Thursday "walk in the park" with this one taking us to the Upper Loddon State Forest.
The description of starting on Porcupine Ridge Road brought up visions of me seeing an animal familiar in my old neck of the woods though Andrew and Gordon quickly dispelled that.
They explained it was probably that people had seen echidnas and mistook them for porcupines.
Having had that clarified it was now time to enjoy the adventure with eleven other happy hikers. The weather was perfect as we set off and the scenery before us was so different from the week before. The track was rocky but luckily not steep which gave us a chance to have a good look around and see familiar remnants of dry diggings.
After finding a nice "neck of the woods" to enjoy our morning tea, we descended into a lovely open area that looked like it would be an ideal camping or picnic spot. At this point we crossed the Tarilta Creek which thankfully was at a low level.
From here we followed the Limestone Track and the Schicer Gully Track back to the cars and enjoyed having a bite to eat before heading home.
A couple of "firsts" on this walk was Don getting in before Colin to find a useful rusted iron coil and Andrew hitting a Puffball (calvatia cyathiformis) for a 6.
Thanks Andrew for a lovely hike in perfect weather with great company!
