Lake Colac and Botanic Gardens - Day Five of Apollo Bay Camp
Hike Report by Fiona
We all
congregated at the Lake View café to enjoy a morning cuppa before our walk
along the shores of Lake Colac and Botanic Gardens. The day was sunny which
enhanced the view across the lake. We sighted many birds along its shores
including greater egrets, swamp hens, pelicans & swans. The path wound its
way beside the caravan park eventually reaching the 5.5 hectare wetland Bird
Reserve. Its inhabitants included various bird species, snakes, frogs and water rats.
We returned
to the Botanic Gardens along the Barongarook Creek Reserve. These gardens are
one of Victoria’s largest – initially being laid out in 1868 by Danial Bruce
(curator of Geelong Botanical Gardens). We admired the many beautiful old trees
as well as the seasonally planted and wonderfully maintained garden beds.
Some of the mature specimen trees have been placed on the National Trust of
Victoria’s Significant Tree Register 1984.
Today’s walk was a relaxing way to spend the last morning of our week together as a hiking group. We reflected on the wonderful and varied walks we’d completed along coastal, river and forest scenery.
We thank Andrew, Gordon and Mark for their dedication and leadership
resulting in such an enjoyable week together.
