Anakie Gorge Hike, Ted Errey Nature Circuit - 11 Kms
Hike Report by Alan
On a beautiful warm morning thirteen hikers met in Buninyong and set off for the
Anakie Gorge Picnic Area, Brisbane Ranges National Park.
Once assembled, ready for our hike and with the temperature rising, we set off following the track along the bottom of the gorge. Occasionally we had to rock hop over the riverbed but there was no fear of us getting wet feet today as the riverbed was bone dry.
Along the way we saw evidence of the major work that was undertaken to bring water to Geelong with a cast iron pipeline placed into tunnels dug out through the sides of the gorge.
Soon we faced our main challenge of the day and the steep ascent of approximately 350 metres. When we had all reached the top, readjusted our clothing, and drank some well needed water we set off for Nelson Lookout Point. From the lookout we were able to have a clear view of Lower Stoney Creek Reservoir in the distance.
After a much-needed break we continued along the Ted Errey Nature Circuit weaving our way through the gum trees bringing us some much-needed shade at times. We did manage to see some of the wildflowers that grow in the area, paper daisy, egg and bacon and grevillea. From the next lookout we were able to see the top of Mount Buninyong.
We then descended back down into Anakie Gorge and followed the track back to our starting point, where we all enjoyed our lunch in the cool shade of the picnic hut.
Thanks to Andrew and Jan for an enjoyable hike!
