Mt Buninyong - Union Jack Circuit - 10.6 Kms

 U3A Hike No. 182

Hike Report by Tim

This was the second official core walk of the U3A 2022 year with 16 familiar faces gathering at the Blackberry Lane Picnic Ground on the lower slopes of Mt Buninyong at 7:30am on a pleasantly cool and temperate morning.

Surprisingly, the walk did not immediately head off uphill towards the summit but ambled gently down to the Locomotive Extended Mine Site and then through the Union Jack Reserve and some adjacent privately owned bushland.

En route, we stopped to inspect the ruins of a house which burned down some years ago with much of the contents including lots of computer equipment abandoned on the site and subsequently saw much evidence of old mining activity in the reserve

Returning to Mt Buninyong we headed towards the South Walk, with two members returning early to the starting point.

Apart from some spectacular views, the South Walk proved to be quite an athletic experience, with considerable numbers of fallen trees to clamber over and around on a generally somewhat overgrown track.

We eventually emerged on the summit road and descended to the starting point for a well-earned lunch.

Key statistics of the walk according to Mr Garmin:

Distance: 11.06 Kms, Height climbed: 362 metres and Time: 2 hours 52 min
