Mollonghip - Barkstead Circuit - 14 Kms
U3A Hike No. 140
Hike Report by Ken Dickson
On Thursday
4th March, 2021, twenty-two keen hikers travelled in convoy from
Kirks to Mollingghip. We parked behind a
small farmlet before heading off through the bush. We hiked to the township of Barkstead where
you could see smoke billowing out of the chimney of another small farmlet. The group could hear the barking of dogs and some
could even hear the playing of a banjo in the background!
There were
many picturesque scenes amongst which were the mining battery close to the gold
mining Mullins Dam, and some of the remains of the Anderson timber Tramway
which used to haul logs to the Sawmill. The
Mill once had twenty-nine kilometres of tram line running to the Mill. We navigated our way through dense scrub to
find the remnants of a wall where we happily sat to have a well-deserved
morning tea.
We continued
the walk in a loop until we returned to our original starting point where we
had lunch and a good chat.
While the weather started quite cool, it ended up being a very suitable day for hiking with very pleasant weather. It was easy to see why this walk was voted amongst our top five hikes during 2020.
