120. Mt Rosea via Grand Stairway

 U3A HIKE NO 120

Hike Report by Andrew Parker

On our first morning on our revised Grampians Hike Week twelve keen hikers arrived at the meeting point very punctually, enabling an early commencement of our car convoy up to our starting point at the Rosea Carpark. All rugged up against the cold and windy conditions Gordon briefed us on what to expect on the day’s adventure and announced that on looking at the makeup of the group we would take the more difficult route via the Grand Stairway.  Not long after we began our ascent up the face of the range via the Grand Stairway, the magnificent views started to open up to us.

At one point, Gordon indicated the sheer cliff face towering above us and pointed out the several climbing routes that he had often utilised in earlier days.

Passing Eagle Rock and the aptly named Gate of the East Wind, we came eventually to the peak known as Mt Rosea and marvelled at the magnificent views away the east before dropping down below the ridge to enjoy our well-earned morning-tea.

We made our way back via the longer but less difficult route and enjoyed the views away to the west, with the aptly named Tower Hill very prominent and eventually found a sheltered place for lunch.

As the day warmed up and the wind abated, we began to see more and more wildflowers which Joy helped us identify with her excellent knowledge of Grampians Flora.

Arriving back at the Rosea Car Park, obviously we hadn’t had enough walking, so we immediately wandered up to inspect the relatively new Bugiga Hiker Camp, built as part of the new Grampians Peaks Trail.
