Yarrowee-Canadian Hike

Yarrowee Creek and Canadian Creek Hike 14km

17th January 2019

By Jan Herperger

When:  A very warm and humid 17th January morning

Who: Fourteen sweaty U3A Ballarat Hikers

Why: Because it was fun and the companionship was terrific. It was also an excuse to try out the new walkie talkies. (thanks to a generous donation from Nina Netherway)

What: Beginning at Andrew and Ingrid's home we walked a 14 km loop taking in the sights along the Canadian Creek trail, down the hill past the old tip and turned north onto the leafy Eureka Track (formerly known as the Wallaby Track) alongside the Yarrowee River. There were a couple of brief stops to sample some fruit from a wild plum tree and to puzzle at the workings of the Redan Wetlands. We continued following the Yarrowee River until it was joined by the Canadian Creek near Steinfeld Street. (Here the Yarrowee River does a disappearing act under Ballarat until it pops into sight again near the Eastern Oval). The path beside Canadian Creek took us past the bottom of the Llanberris Athletics Reserve, through the grounds of the Mercure Hotel and Convention Centre, past the Canadian Lakes and finally back to Andrew's. It was a bit of a relief to sit down and cool off on Andrew's back verandah and drink cold water and/or coffee. Andrew gave us a talk about the dangers of ticks whereby a few of us started to feel suddenly itchy!

Thanks again Andrew for organising an enjoyable walk and for providing much appreciated beverages afterwards.
