Buninyong -Union Jack Hike

U3A Ballarat Hike Number 54
By Marianne Kennedy
Commencing
outside the swimming pool in Forest Street, Buninyong, 18 enthusiastic hikers
followed our Pied Piper (Andrew), all with great expectations of an interesting
hike. We, as usual, were not disappointed.
The
hike took us down Forest Street, through De Soza Park after which we wound our
way around to Geelong Road and followed the trail up the hill to Mt Helen. It
was actually quite warm when we commenced the hike however the occasional cool
breezes were really welcome. We crossed Geelong Road into Gear Avenue and made
the climb almost to the top of the hill. This section was all on the bush track
that runs parallel to the road. We then crossed Gear Avenue and followed
Chapman’s Lane through the bush into the Union Jack Reserve. It was lovely
walking along the bush tracks and enjoying the natural beauty of the outdoors.
Bracken was plentiful along the side of the track. The hike was interesting and
varied and at one stage, involved a quite steep descent to cross the Union Jack
Creek. The ascent the other side gave a perception of the undulating landscape.
Morning
tea was enjoyed at Locomotive Hill. Nearby a bronze plaque commemorated the
death of two miners who perished in the Locomotive Extended Mine in 1933 due to
the inhalation of carbon monoxide gas. The plaque also recognises the heroic
efforts of the two men who were involved in the rescue.
We
then continued on through the Union Jack Reserve appreciating the beauty of the
bush at the same time enjoying pleasant conversation with fellow walkers. After
exiting the Union Jack Reserve we walked down Fisken Street, past the Buninyong
Community Reserve to arrive back at the starting point.
Coffee
afterwards at the Espresso Depot was a welcome finish to a great hike.
Thanks
Andrew and thanks everyone for your company.
