316. Long Forest Flora & Fauna Reserve 13.4km

 U3A Hike No 316

Hike Report By Colin Fraser

Ten cheerful hikers set off from Kirk’s Reservoir to north of Bacchus Marsh for a 13 km walk in the Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve. The walk was led by Mark, with Gordon as the whip.

The track/walk: We followed the Coimadai Creek for the most part, doing a small loop before returning along the same route. The walk was hilly, with lots of ups and downs. A large part of the track was on small, loose shale, which was tricky on the downhill sections.

Weather: Mild, dry, with a slight breeze

Flora: Wattle trees were in flower. The small patch of Bull Mallee vegetation we saw is its only occurrence south of the Great Dividing Range.

Fauna: Many wombat holes, plus lots of droppings.

Interesting fact: Your correspondent discovered evidence of pre-historical life on the trail - a fossilised brontosaurus (albeit small and plastic).

A pleasant, scenic and interesting walk. We walked 14 km! - we got our money’s worth. Thanks to Mark and Gordon.
